Peelable (Laminated) Shim

Laminated shim was manufactured for use in an aerospace application. Primary manufacturing processes consist of shearing, drilling, and milling to fabricate this shim to the exact measurements specified by the customer in order to ensure a perfect fit upon application.


Shim Thickness: Having calculated the maximum variation that may result from tolerance accumulation, it is recommended that shim thickness be specified at just above that figure. Fully laminated sheet thicknesses range from 0.15mm (0.006”) to 20.3mm (0.80”).

 

Foil Thickness: Foils ranging from 0.025mm (0.001”) or 0.1mm (0.004”) are used in the manufacture of standard shim stock and will impact on the final degree of accuracy achieved on the assembly fit. Foils of 0.05mm (0.002”) or 0.075mm (0.003”) normally satisfy most assembly demands.

Edgebond Shim

Used within an engine mount application in the aerospace industry, this custom shim was machined from aluminum and consists of 63 layers edgebond glued to form a thickness measuring only .187". Edgebonding offers the flexibility for peeling layers to suit specific tolerances, and each peeled layer can be re-used used as a single shim. For this part, each of the 63 layers measured slightly less than .003" thick.

Tapered Shims

Tapered shims are precision CNC milled. They are intended for use in an assembly application. Secondary operations included deburring and part marking the part number onto the shim using an ink-jet part marking machine.

 

The 2024-T3 aluminum CNC milled part was primed and anodized with a chromic acid finish. It measured 0.400” long, 0.240” wide and 0.020” to 0.100” high and performed dimensional inspections.
